Wind energy is one of the best choices for powering the future. It helps diminish acid rain, smog, and greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.
Since 2002, Enbridge has invested in about 3,300 MW (gross) of wind-power capacity globally, based on projects either in operation or under construction, and is one of Canada's leading suppliers of renewable energy.
In November 2016, Enbridge added to its existing U.S. wind energy portfolio with the acquisition of the 249-MW Chapman Ranch Wind Project in Nueces County, Texas. With the addition of Chapman Ranch, Enbridge now owns six wind assets in the U.S. with a combined generating capacity of more than 1,100 MW (gross).
Across the Atlantic Ocean, Enbridge made its debut in the European offshore wind generation market in 2015, with its acquisition of a 24.9-percent interest in the 400-megawatt Rampion Offshore Wind Project, located 13 kilometers due south of Brighton, England, in the English Channel. Given our well-established renewables business and growing proficiency in wind power technology, the Rampion project is a natural next step for Enbridge, as it further develops our expertise in the business and supports our objective of developing new platforms for growth.
Enbridge expanded its presence in European offshore wind in mid-2016, with the acquisition of a 50-percent interest in Éolien Maritime France (EMF) SAS, a French offshore wind development company. The investment in EMF provides Enbridge with the opportunity to increase the generating capacity of its renewable energy portfolio by 1,428 megawatts (605 MW net).
Enbridge's wind energy portfolio—including projects either operating, planned or under construction—now totals 16 North American wind assets, one UK offshore wind facility, and one German offshore wind farm. Combined, Enbridge now has interests in a total gross generation capacity of about 3,300 MW—including the 300 MW Blackspring Ridge project near Lethbridge, AB, the largest wind facility in Western Canada.
